Military Budget Cuts and Troop Drawdowns: What's the Impact on Commercial SATCOMS?
As the U.S. and its allies drawdown from Iraq and Afghanistan, a new Strategic Defense Doctrine by the Pentagon is calling for a re-orientation of the Department of Defense’s force structure and mission. The doctrine states the U.S. DoD will “augment investments in special operations forces, unmanned systems, ISR, space systems, and cyberspace.” With this new doctrine in place, how will commercial SATCOMs be affected by the new thrust?
The new policy will operate in an environment where spending cuts in the U.S. alone of $489 billion will be implemented over the next 10 years. Yet, militaries are faced with potential flashpoints that will necessitate sustained or increased operations such as the deterioration of the U.S. and its allies’ relationship with Iran and North Korea, which may require renewed military engagement.
For satellite missions and applications, “boots on the ground” will likely be a diminished strategy, but “eyes in the sky” for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) will be the way forward that will likely exacerbate an already protracted satellite bandwidth crunch.
This webinar will discuss and examine the role, opportunities and threats affecting commercial SATCOMs, drilling down on specific market scenarios, applications and offerings in view of a changing and potentially volatile market.
Questions to Answer in this Webinar:
- What are the various scenarios by which military demand for commercial SATCOMs will continue?
- What specific issues must satellite operators and systems integrators address in the changing landscape?
- What is the impact of pricing strategies given increasing demand but diminishing budgets?
- Which applications will see the highest demand and which services will diminish over time?
- Where do specific U.S. and non-U.S. Military opportunities lie?
