NSR discussed OneWeb and SpaceX in one presentation. NSR’s estimates of the cost of OneWeb’s constellation exceeded $5 billion, while the company has raised $3.5 billion to date.
An inflection point is coming in the next six to twelve months for the multibillion dollar satellite megaconstellations, when it will become apparent which ones will succeed and which ones “will take a pause or exit,” Chris Baugh, Northern Sky Research president, said Oct. 9 at the Satellite Innovation 2019 conference.
Christopher Baugh, president of consultancy at NSR, kicked off the roundtable-style discussion with the presentation of multiple data points highlighting key growth areas and investment trends including satellite financing.
“Unless you have some really solid contracts up front, you have to build [backlog] from the ground up,” said Chris Baugh, president of the consulting firm Northern Sky Research. “It’s not like the old days where you flip the switch and 70 percent of your satellite is full.”
