Sumanta joins NSR as a Senior Analyst from November 2018 and is based out of Germany.
Before joining NSR, he played a key role in the founding of two crowd-investing platforms, FunderNation and Spacestarters (together with Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen – AZO) in Germany. As an investment manager at a German Venture Capital (VC) firm, he served on the board of 3 German startups and gained extensive experience in technology scouting, portfolio management, market research and investment management. Additionally, he worked with Open Sky Technologies Fund, the initiative from European Space Agency (ESA) to promote the establishment of a fund, supporting start-ups and early stage companies using space-related technologies in non-space applications. Aligned to his experience, he was a jury member to several business plan competitions.
He also had a brief opportunity to work alongside with the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the Malaysian Space Agency (ANGKASA). He presented a case for Venture Capital and Space Spinoffs to a group of government officials during a ‘Workshop on Developing Malaysia Space Industry’ in ANGKASA.
Sumanta has a Master of Science in Space Studies from International Space University (ISU), Strasbourg, and a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Mumbai. Alongside studies, he began working on various technology projects in India, including working with Godrej Aerospace for precision manufacturing of propulsion system components for Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). While in ISU, he worked in a team project E-health – space applications for disaster management. The project received funding from SES Astra and entered into a partnership with Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOSS). Currently, he is also involved with ISU as a visiting lecturer on Venture Capital and space technology, and fundraising for startups.
