Energy Markets in Midst of Bandwidth Revolution

NSR Report Projects over 25 Gbps of Bandwidth Demand and $2.2 Billion in Revenues by 2022

CAMBRIDGE, MA – March 12, 2013 – According to NSR’s Energy Markets via Satellite, 3rd Edition report released today, Energy Markets are in the midst of a bandwidth revolution that will positively affect satellite companies over the next decade.  More applications at more remote locations continue to drive demand for satellite services, and Oil & Gas, Mining, and Utility end-users will demand over 25 Gbps of satellite capacity by 2022.

“The Oil & Gas market continues to lead the Energy sector in total revenues,” states Brad Grad, author of the report. “The Shale-gas boom, deeper waters, smarter grids, and mining automation all combine to generate over $17 Billion in cumulative revenues for satellite providers over the next ten years.”

Combined, the Energy Markets will generate $2.2 Billion in revenues for satellite service providers by 2022, up from $0.7 Billion in 2012.  For Onshore markets, utilities and shale-gas drive market growth, where North America will lead total In-service Units by 2022, followed by Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle-East Africa. Offshore, maturing markets in the Atlantic Ocean give way to the Pacific Ocean as more activity shifts into the region, while the Indian Ocean remains a solid third place.  The Arctic, a distant fourth, is limited by complex operating conditions and available natural resources elsewhere.

Terrestrial penetration continues across the O&G, mining, and utility sectors; however, new exploration activities in remote locations and increased focus on resilient infrastructure help solidify the position of satellite services.

Bottom Line, with over 460,000 In-service Units and $2.2 Billion in revenues by 2022, the Energy Market continues to provide solid growth for the satellite communications industry.  Oil & Gas continues to generate the most revenues, Utilities will provide more In-service units, and Mining will remain a steady, complementary opportunity.
